Feeling Overwhelmed? Can’t Breathe? Take a Hike!

Written by: Monica Bestek

Feeling overwhelmed? Need some fresh air? Or just looking to do something different from your regular ol’ gym sesh? Here’s an idea to get you out burning calories and falling back in love with life:

Take a hike! No really, actually do it!

Here’s why…

The feeling of climbing to the top of a mountain is absolutely sublime and empowering, congruent to conquering real-life obstacles. And it’s even more beautiful when you reach a waterfall and drown in fresh air. If you’re still not convinced that you need to go for a hike this weekend, here are some compelling reasons to throw caution to the wind and get your butt outside.

Nothing Beats Real Fresh Air (there’s scientific backing)

From the crisp breeze grazing your face or the warmth of the sun chafing your skin and warming the cockles of your heart, you’ll just (no doubt) feel amazing, less stressed, and redeemed - especially if you live in a city. So take some time to escape the urban noise and pollution…your lungs and sanity will thank you for it later.

Burn Dem Calories Girl

Are you sick of engaging in the same gym routine or running the same route? You already know this, but I’m reiterating: Hiking is the perfect activity to break up the banality…instead, climb a mountain or bike down a trail to get your heart rate up without feeling like you’re exercising.

Clear your mind

Hiking is also an amazing form of meditation. The solitude allows you to feel a sense of awe-inspiring peace and accomplishment by taking in all the beauty around you. It definitely helps me clear my mind of the normal day-to-day stresses and focus on myself. Take advantage of the isolation and reflect on your life, values, and priorities - what’s most important to you?

Again, Reduces Stress

If you’re like me and can be overwhelmed and stressed, hiking is the perfect antidote to shave those anxious feelings. There’s something about being surrounded by nature that lulls you into a relaxed state and puts you at ease. Once you’re out there, there’s nothing else to do than simply exist.
