7 Ways to Save Money as a Fashion Blogger

Written by: Brittany Grace

A lot of people have a preconceived notion that as a fashion blogger you’re going to be gifted with lavish “blogger mail”, flying first class, and going to A-list events for free. While Snapchat and Instagram may want you to think that, there’s always more than what meets the eye. Yes, the big timers get some pretty amazing stuff, but for the average style obsessed girl, fashion blogging can be a very expensive side hustle and we could use every way to save money!

1. Recycle outfits.

Ever hear about the 80/20 rule? 80% of the time you wear 20% of your clothes? Well, it’s a real thing and it’s a really great thing for fashion bloggers! You can totally get away with wearing the same jeans or top multiple days in a row as long as you mix and match. Change your shoes, throw on a scarf, add a blazer, etc. This money saving trick works especially well in the winter. You just layer up and no one has any idea what you’re wearing!

2. Buy off-season clothes.

This is my absolute favorite way to save money as a fashion blogger. I have gotten coats that were originally $120 for $20 in May. That’s almost an 85% discount! I bought a $35 romper for $7 once in September. Shop for summer pieces in fall and winter pieces in spring - it’s genius. (Shopping secret: H&M is the best store for this… you’re welcome!)

3. Donate old clothes & write it off.

I’m a huge advocate of donating old clothes, 1. because I’m too lazy to sell them and 2. it helps someone in need. Over the years, I’ve donated close to $3,000 in clothing and accessories and the best part is I got a tax break. Depending on how much you donate, what it’s worth, etc, it may or may not be a great financial break. Almost every second-hand store offers a tax return slip, but be sure to ask for it before leaving.

4. Sell on eBay/Tictail/Depop.

If you’re not lazy like me, you can sell your unworn or lightly used clothes on eBay, Tictail, or Depop. When I’m feeling motivated I will sell on eBay - I find it to be the easiest and most effective. eBay does charge a final value shipping fee, but they’re usually pretty low. Keep in mind, the higher price you sell for, the higher eBay’s fees.

5. Fill your cart & wait.

This money saving trick is amazing and applies to most online stores. Sign into your account of any store of your choice, add desired items to your shopping cart, close the tab/logout, and wait. Usually in a day or two, you’ll get a coupon or sale code for the stuff you wanted as a limited time offer. Then, go back in and make your purchases at the discounted rate. How great is that?! (Shopping secret: Amazon, Target, and CVS are the best.)

6. Closet swap

Closet swapping amongst fashion bloggers is an unconventional and somewhat awkward way to save money, but it works. Have you always wanted that Chloe bag your friend has? Ask to borrow it for a shoot. The more blogger friends you have, the better for both sides!

7. Ask for discounts/samples

With fashion blogging becoming so popular, tons of stores are offering discounts to bloggers. Sheinside offers free clothes to bloggers with over 5,000 followers on social media and A Common Space gives bloggers a discount. Smaller indie brands are more likely to give away samples, if not great discounts to bloggers and all you have to do is ask!
