Nothing gets me as worked up as a good, lived-in smokey eye! Hands down, it’s always my go-to.
Something about sultry eyes is always alluring and mysterious. Though it can seem super petrifying, don’t be fooled, a smokey eye is probably one of the easiest looks to create. Below, I show you exactly how to achieve it in just 5 easy steps. The best part about my method is that it can be modified as you become more comfortable in the art of eyeshadow blending; you can intensify the colors, add depth by layering on product in the outer corner of your eyes, or completely alter the color range for a brand new look. Let’s get started.
Step 1: The Base
Of course you should prime your eyelids, but I won’t count that as step one. Take an eyeliner in any color (I used brown in this case) and apply it messily all over your lid, then take a brush and blend it out. Note that this step is very forgiving so your eyeliner need not be perfect.
Step 2: The Eyeshadow
This easy peasy application should take no longer than 3 minutes total.
Pick three eyeshadows in the same or similar color range - go for a dark, medium, and light shade. Take a brush and apply a wash of the darkest color all over your eye lid and stop right before reaching the socket of your eyes. Then, take the middle color onto a blending brush and use it to blend out the darkest eyeshadow into your eye socket in a windshield wiper motion. Blend, blend, blend! Do not be afraid - patience is key. Lastly, take the lightest shade onto your brow bone and the inner corner of your eyes.
Step 3: The Lower Lashline
Take the eyeliner you used in Step 1 and smudge it onto your lower lash line. You can extend it outwards as if you were creating a winged eyeliner as I did below to elongate your eyes. After doing so, smudge the liner with your finger tips. Fingers do a great job creating a natural, smudgy look.
Step 4: The Liner
Finish off by adding liner on your top lash line. This step can be done at your discretion and with any product of your choice. It can be as simple as black eyeshadow or as complicated as liquid eyeliner. Your options are limitless. When I’m really wanting a punk rock look, I just smudge a super creamy black kohl liner on top, but when I want more definition, I’ll go for liquid or gel instead.
Step 5: Mascara
And of course, a mandatory step for smokey eyes: Curl your lashes and apply several coats of volumizing mascara.
