How to Get Into Fashion With No Experience

Written by: Brittany Grace

One of the hardest and most crowded industries to get into is fashion. If you’re reading this you’re well aware and looking for a solution. The good news is there’s not only one solution, but a ton of ways you can get into fashion with no experience.

Start a blog

Starting a blog is the easiest and most obvious way to get into fashion with no experience. You’re the boss and you have control over everything including your blog’s success or failure. Of course running a blog is a marathon not a sprint and it will take time to gain momentum.

Freelance for online magazines

Freelancing is a great way to get into fashion with no experience, but don’t expect Vogue to come knocking on your door asking. Start with smaller indie magazines like The Everygirl, Hey Mama, and The Last Magazine.

Create an app

There’s actually a program called Appypie that allows you to make your own app in 5 steps. App-ers beware: We do not need another outfit shopping app. Every day bloggers are emailed about a new app that looks exactly the same as the new app from the day before. What app can you make that’s one of a kind?

Send a cold e-mail

Cold e-mailing is extremely underrated. You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. You don’t want to send any old e-mail, especially one where you’re begging for a job.

You want to focus on how the company will benefit from hiring you. Your e-mail should be about how you admire the person/company you’re emailing and how you’d love to learn from him/her as well as the skills you’d bring to the table.

Start a clothing line

Starting a clothing line is tricky and usually helps if you have some experience in retail or e-commerce, but it’s definitely not required. With Etsy, Depop, and Tictail there are a ton of ways to sell your stuff without sacrificing time and money.

If you broke into the fashion industry with no experience, share your story in the comments below! We’d love to hear from you.
