Now more than ever is the best time to create your own job. A. It’s pretty difficult to land a job in your desired field without knowing someone or having related experience, and B. You have more resources than anyone before you - the internet is right at your fingertips…literally!
Because of the internet, we can learn another language, how to code, the best marketing techniques, how to make an eGuide, etc. You are more powerful than you think, so here are the steps to tap into that power and create a job when you can’t find one:
Pick a niche
Niche is such a buzz word nowadays, but in today’s business world, especially blogging, you have to be niche in order to stand out from a seemingly saturated digital world. There’s a saying that goes, ‘If you’re talking to everyone you’re talking to no one’. Choose a very niche group of people to talk to and watch your business boom. RE/DONE did this particularly well when they chose to target people who want to “go green” and wear trendy jeans.
Find a problem
This can be done in a few different ways: 1. take a survey via Facebook, Instagram, or your blog (Survey Monkey is awesome for this), 2. Think of your own problems that need solving, 3. Look at a market you’re particularly interested in and think about what could be done better.
For example, it is so hard for me to find jeans that fit like a glove. I’m either 3/4 the size of one jean or 1/2 the size of another so, one day half kidding I thought, ‘There should be a jean that’s in-between sizes… THE IN-BETWEEN JEAN!’ Jeanius.
Find a solution & niche down even more
There might be 10 different solutions to your chosen problem, but you want to pick the solution that’s most groundbreaking and unique. If you go after all the solutions you’ll get overwhelmed and your focus will wander.
Let’s go back to my jean idea - I could start with an in-between blue jean, then black jeans, then leather pants, then shirts, then…? When all else fails keep this in mind: Starbucks started with just ONE cup of coffee.
Create a killer product/service
Once you have your solution, it’s time to bring it to life. It’s pretty rare that you’ll come up with something that’s absolutely never been done before, and that’s ok. Don’t reinvent the wheel, but make it better. Let’s look at jeans again, there’s Citizen’s, Joe’s, J Brand, Hudson, Topshop, Paige, etc. I’m one of those people who prefers a high-waisted jean that sucks and tucks in all the right place but doesn’t break the bank.
What’s the solution? Topshop. What’s the product? The Jamie high waisted skinny jean. What’s their niche market? Edge-y hipsters in their twenties. Topshop has a killer product for a killer price for a super niche market, which is why they’re dominating the retail industry.
Now it’s your turn, what job would you create for yourself and what’s stopping you from doing it? Tell us in the comments below!
