12 Important Things I’ve Learnt This Year

Written by: Zanita Whittington

I’m currently in Fiji, one of the first places in the world to bring in the New Year. I’m feeling smug because I know for me it’s already 2015 - but some of you are still waiting to celebrate!

I’ve had an unreal year, the best of my life. I’ve had some highs and lows - but this has been a year of lessons and for that I’m all the richer. If you aren’t learning and striving for something new you’re certainly doing something wrong. Here’s a list of some of the most important lessons I’ve gained from 2014.

1. Trust in yourself.

If you’ve got an idea - follow through with it with conviction. This year my own self-belief really took me that extra step further, in all aspects of my life. Believe in yourself and others will too.

2. Hardwork always pays off.

Sometimes it pays off just a little bit and sometimes it pays back big time - often you can’t tell which - but you can guarantee if you do things by halves, you’ll end up with what you deserve, which will be second best.

3. Sometimes it pays to be selfish.

You can’t please everyone, it’s totally impossible. Sometimes you just need to pursue the goals and dreams you want in life even if other people in your life don’t approve or want something else for you.

4. I need a bigger wardrobe.

Aka I should buy fewer clothes… easier said than done when you’re a self professed fashion enthusiast. I guess the answer is quality over quantity.

5. Confidence is worth more than gold and diamonds.

Being part of Fashion Bloggers TV I really felt thrown into the deep end - but sometimes you gotta sink or swim! I really learn alot about myself in this way… within a couple months of filming I felt like I could speak in front of anyone and it’s helped me in all areas of my life.

6. You are the summary of the people you spend the most time with.

If you’re spending a lot of time with people without drive and ambition then it can rub off on you too. If you’re someone leaving school or still pretty young and figuring it out - then you can’t be faulted for sticking with the same friends - but later in life, pick and choose the people you spend more time with because attitudes and ideas can work like osmosis.

7. It’s ok to be weird.

I actually always knew that it was ok to be weird - but now I think its better to be weird/original and challenge people’s ideas about what’s really normal than it is to be well… normal!

8. Dare to dream bigger.

Have you ever wondered why some people end up in cubicles and some people become world class athletes and climb everest and become great leaders? It’s because those who seek greatness are inhibited by their own ambition. One day I hope to turn my blog into a great business and work with loads of great people. Just gotta dream it up!

9. Uncomfortable shoes are just not worth it.

I don’t really wear heels so often anymore… and if i do, they are really good ones… meaning they cost me too much or they have a good block or low heel. Wearing sneakers more often too - which brings me to my next point..

10. Exercise is one of the keys to happiness.

Healthy body/healthy mind. So true! I’ve dropped off the exercise train completely this past year and the lethargy sucks! Means I get stressed more easily, can’t eat whatever I want and worse. One of my news years resolutions is to wear gym gear more often so I get the feeling for being active - and then off course, go to the gym!

11. Research, research, research.

If you working in a field that hasn’t exactly demanded a university degree to get you there - doing your own kind of study will put you ahead of the pack. You really have to understand what you’re up against - and don’t pat yourself on the back until your understand what makes someone the best in your field and how to achieve that.

12. Take the road less travelled.

You can learn a lot about yourself by choosing to be part of a unique and challenging environment. Seek out adventure!
